Right away

1. Stop the source if it's safe. Burst pipe or appliance: the main shut-off, usually where the water line enters the basement — on the street side in most Kitchener homes. Sewer backup: nothing to shut off; go to step 2.
2. Cut power to the affected area if it's safe. If the panel or outlets are near the water, stay out and call the utility.
3. Stay out of sewer water. It carries bacteria. Keep kids and pets away.
4. Move what you can — valuables, electronics, documents, anything on the floor that isn't already wet.
5. Photograph everything before moving or discarding — for the claim.
6. Call for extraction, then your insurer. Insurers expect you to mitigate; don't wait for the adjuster.
